Island Cabin

The Island Cabin is an exploration in the design for small-scale remote living. Our task was to develop a self contained unit that could function in a variety of conditions and uses, primarily as a dwelling for residents and guests outside of their primary residence, either as a standalone unit or as part of a larger cluster of cabins. The form is long and slender, with access at one end and an expanse of glazing aimed at framing views at the opposite end. The flanking outer walls extend beyond this glazing to provide privacy to the patio, which is completed with an outdoor bath. The floorplan steps down from the entry in response to the sloped site, allowing for higher ceilings in the primary living area, which is complemented with a wood stove. The shotgun plan creates an efficient arrangement of space and utilizes the main corridor in a number of unique and functional ways.
