Prairie Residence
The design for this long and low single-family residence is rooted in the prairie style of architecture, suitable to the relatively flat and far spanning site that is typical of the prairies. The form is developed as a simple long bar that is articulated in the centre to create a protected south-facing courtyard accessible from the main shared interior spaces. The building is oriented to take full advantage of the endless views to the south and west, with a solid north elevation that protects the home from the cold winter north winds. The deep roof overhangs protect the interior spaces from the hot sun during the summer months and reducing the amount of snow that builds up around the home in winter. The material nature of the design is meant to encompass durability over time, with a robust concrete base that is clad above in vertical steel.
